VALLEJO, Calif., Feb. 21 (UPI) -- As the premier of a feature film about the San Francisco area's Zodiac killer nears, the real-life serial killer case remains open.
Although San Francisco police deactivated the case in 2003, police in Vallejo, Calif., say new evidence may lead to breaks in the decades old Zodiac killings, ABC News reported Wednesday.
"We've been contacted by ... people indicating that they believe there was evidence out there that we could still test. So, we've taken that and run with it," said Detective Mathew Meredith.
"Hopefully, it will turn something up. And if it doesn't, this is kinda stirring the pot, and we'll see what floats to the surface," he said.
Robert Graysmith, an amateur detective portrayed in the film by Jake Gyllenhaal, identified a suspect in the killings, which began in 1968.
Graysmith amassed circumstantial evidence tying Arthur Leigh Allen to each of the five confirmed killings, but the suspect died in 1993 and a DNA analysis of a stamp used by the killer did not match Allen's profile.
