Thailand election may be postponed

BANGKOK, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Thailand's general election, set for October, will likely be postponed due to problems finding election commissioners, the country's prime minister said.

The country has been in a political crisis since the courts invalidated the April 2 parliamentary vote, which the party of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra won overwhelmingly when opposition parties boycotted.

Since then, Thailand has had no seated Parliament and only a caretaker government under the prime minister.

The Bangkok Criminal Court later convicted the country's three election commissioners of mishandling the election by allowing unqualified candidates to run, and sentenced them to four years in prison.

The three commissioners were widely seen as Thaksin allies.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej had approved Oct. 15 for a general election. But now Thaksin says the vote will need to be postponed to a date his cabinet will determine.

His announcement coincides with a claim by an Election Commission candidate of attempts to influence the candidate-selection process, The Bangkok Post reported.
