Seniors, GOPers wary of Social Security

ST. LEO, Fla., April 4 (UPI) -- Florida's bellwether retirement communities are becoming increasingly skeptical of President Bush's plan to reform Social Security.

As GOP congressional leaders such as House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert of Illinois and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley of Iowa have begun to express doubt that legislative action will take place this year, representatives from Florida are being inundated with calls from aging constituents unconvinced Bush's proposal would not adversely affect them, the Boston Globe reported.

"The president has not done a great job in selling this plan," Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite, R-Fla., said at a town-hall meeting Thursday in Saint Leo. "Seniors are petrified that their Social Security that they've come to depend on ... will be impacted in some way."
