Abbas, who was expected to travel to Jordan later Sunday, is running for president of the Palestinian Authority.

He said his discussions will continue with officials on Egyptian security cooperation, mainly training Palestinian police officers who would assume control of the Gaza Strip in the event of Israel's withdrawal from that area.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abul Ghait said he and Egypt's intelligence chief, Omar Suleiman, will visit Israel Wednesday to discuss Israel's withdrawal from Gaza and the facilitating of the Palestinian election process.

Egypt has offered its assistance in securing the Gaza Strip after the "rehabilitation" of the Palestinian security services and by coordinating with the Israelis the control of the Rafah border between Gaza and Egypt.
