TRENTON, N.J., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Based on his contributions to his own party, outgoing New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey is not exactly straining to gain the favor of national Democrats.
McGreevey, who is leaving in November after disclosing a homosexual affair with an Israeli citizen, is giving a mere $25,000 from his state Democratic party's $2.5-million war chest to help John Kerry, the New York Post reported Tuesday.
That contrasts with mega-millionaire Sen. Jon Corzine, former head of Goldman Sachs, who kicked in $250,000, and millionaire Sen. Frank Lautenberg who gave $20,000 to get out the vote.
McGreevey's detractors are sniping that his lack of generosity to the Kerry camp exposes them to a Bush win in the Garden State, something his supporters label as bunk.
"Anybody who believes these polls (showing a close race) is a political neophyte or an idiot," said state Sen. Ray Lesniak, who has offered McGreevey a job when he leaves the governor's mansion.
