Kerry wins Minnesota caucuses

MINNEAPOLIS, March 3 (UPI) -- Minnesota's Super Tuesday caucuses were packed and the outcome went heavily for Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, who won more than half of caucus-goers.

With 87 percent of the 4,000 precincts counted, Kerry led North Carolina Sen. John Edwards 51 percent to 27 percent. Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich, running against the war in Iraq, ran third with 17 percent.

Kerry won nine of the 10 state primaries or caucuses Tuesday. Howard Dean took his home state of Vermont two weeks after formally ending his campaign for his first primary win. Dean received 2 percent in Minnesota and New York activist Al Sharpton less than 1 percent.

Reports that Edwards would quit the race Wednesday took the spotlight off the caucuses as groups formed in schools and community centers to pick between the candidates.

Democrat-Farm-Labor State Chairman Mike Erlandson said the caucus turnout was the biggest since Vietnam.
