Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak undergoes thumb surgery

Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak will be out of the lineup after undergoing thumb surgery, the team announced Tuesday.

Pastrnak will miss at least the next two weeks as he recovers from a tendon procedure on his left thumb.

The winger suffered the injury Sunday night while attending a team sponsorship dinner with teammates. Pastrnak informed Bruins general manager Don Sweeney that he fell as he walked to his transportation.

Pastrnak met with members of the Bruins' medical staff Monday morning, who determined he would need surgery. The team expects Pastrnak to return this season.

"I met with David [Monday] morning," Sweeney told reporters. "He was extremely upset, disappointed. He obviously feels like he let everybody down despite it being an accident and was apologetic. And it was heartfelt in trying to explain that accidents happen, and I said the same thing to him, that they do."

Pastrnak leads the Bruins with 66 points (31 goals, 35 assists) this season. He has 269 points (125 goals, 144 assists) in 310 career NHL games across five seasons, all with the Bruins.

Prior to Tuesday night's game against the Chicago Blackhawks, the Bruins were fourth in the Eastern Conference with 70 points.
