Detroit Red Wings' Justin Abdelkader fined $5K for spearing incident vs. New York Islanders

Detroit Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader received a $5,000 fine from the NHL for spearing New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield, the league announced on Wednesday.

The fine is the maximum allowable under the collective bargaining agreement.

Abdelkader, 30, was assessed a minor penalty for slashing following the incident, which occurred with 43 seconds remaining of the first period of the Red Wings' 6-3 win over the Islanders on Tuesday.

An alternate captain for Detroit, Abdelkader has just 32 penalty minutes in 32 games this season to go along with five goals and 13 assists.
