Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson is expected to be sidelined for 12 weeks after suffering a broken wrist, and that means his season is probably over.

Ericsson suffered the injury in Thursday's game against Washington, and he is scheduled to undergo surgery next week.

The Red Wings placed Ericsson on long-term injured reserve and recalled goalie Jimmy Howard from Grand Rapids of the AHL.

Howard has not played for the Red Wings since December after suffering a knee injury. He has been with Grand Rapids on a conditioning assignment.

Ericsson has one goal and eight assists in 51 games this season, but he is best known for his defensive prowess.

"You're missing Jonathan Ericsson," Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said after Thursday's game, according to the Detroit Free Press. "People don't have enough respect for what 6-foot-5, and good skating, or 6-foot-6, whatever he is, and good skating can do for you. When you are playing against big, physical men, you need guys that can go against them and handle them as he can."

Ericsson 32, is signed for three more seasons at a cap hit of $4.25 million.
