CHICAGO, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Keith Appling supplied 22 points, eight assists and eight rebounds Tuesday, igniting No. 2 Michigan State over No. 1 Kentucky 78-74.
Gary Harris pumped in 20 points and Adreian Payne added 15 for the Spartans (2-0), who won in the first meeting of the nation's two top-ranked teams since 2008.

In that game, Memphis -- led by current Kentucky Coach John Calipari -- defeated Tennessee.
Michigan State beat a No. 1-ranked team for just the fourth time in 23 all-time tries.
The Wildcats (2-1) were led by freshman Julius Randle with 27 points and 13 rebounds.
James Young chipped in with 19 points for Kentucky.
