Siena to replace basketball coach

LONDONVILLE, N.Y., March 12 (UPI) -- Siena has fired men's basketball coach Mitch Buonaguro after a 24-loss season, the school said Tuesday.

Buonaguro took over at Siena in 2010 after the Saints had made three consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Siena has gone a combined 35-59 overall and 20-34 in the MAAC since.

Siena was 8-24 this season, including a 4-14 MAAC record for ninth in the 10-team league.

"Mitch has represented Siena College in a very positive way," Siena College President the Rev. Kevin Mullen said. "I consider him a close, personal friend and know how much passion he put into his job.

"It's a difficult decision but it was made with the best interest of our program and student-athletes in mind."

Siena was the second head coaching position for Buonaguro, 59. He coached at Fairfield from 1985-91, building a 72-103 record. He was an assistant at Siena from 2005-10 before being promoted to head coach.
