COL BKB: S. Alabama 76, Florida St. 71

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Three free throws with 26 to go by Freddie Goldstein put South Alabama in front for good Friday en route to a 76-71 upset of No. 24 Florida State.

In a season-opening game that was close throughout, the Seminoles moved in front by one when Ian Miller hit a 3-pointer when 63 seconds to play.

Terrance Shannon then fouled Goldstein as he attempted a 3-pointer and all three of his free throw attempts were good to put the Jaguars ahead to stay.

A missed 3-pointer by Florida State's Michael Snaer with 13 seconds remaining sealed the Seminoles' fate.

Augustine Rubit led South Florida in scoring with 12 points while both Goldstein and Mychal Ammons had 11.

Florida State, which won the ACC Tournament last season for the first time in school history, was led by 11 points each from Montay Brandon and Terry Whisnant.
