NEW YORK, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- St. John's men's basketball Coach Steve Lavin will have prostate cancer surgery Thursday, the New York school said Wednesday.

After the operation at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Lavin is expected to be back on the job after a recovery period.

The 47-year-old coach had disclosed last April he had been diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer the previous fall.

"After weighing treatment options with the experts at Sloan, we have decided surgery is the best path to take for my particular prostate cancer condition," Lavin said. "We are confident that this course of treatment will lead to a cancer-free life."

The Red Storm went 21-12 last season and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since their vacated appearance in 2002.
