Marlins part ways with Ivan Rodriguez

NEW YORK, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- As expected, the list included lots of marques names when the midnight deadline for free agents to sign with their current teams was lengthy.

The most notable was catcher Ivan Rodriguez of the world champion Florida Marlins. Others known to be on it are Gary Sheffield, Vladimir Guerrero, Rich Aurilia, Javy Lopez, Kevin Millwood, Greg Maddux, Bartolo Colon, Miguel Tejada, Roy Oswalt, Rafael Palmeiro, Jose Lima, Kenny Lofton, and Mike Cameron.

Since no deal was reached between Rodriguez and the Marlins, Florida forfeited negotiating rights with him until May 1. He cannot be offered arbitration since the Marlins agreed contractually not to offer the process when they signed the 10-time All-Star to a one-year contract last winter.

Talks between the two sides broke down on Friday during a conference call.

"I hope our players and fans understand we did make an effort," said General Manager Larry Beinfest.

They reportedly offered Rodriguez a two-year deal worth $16 million. He signed for $10 million last season.

With Sheffield, who reportedly has signed with the New York Yankees, the Braves were expected to offer arbitration if only to secure draft picks as compensation.

Some teams will announce their decisions on Monday.
