Colorado evens West Conference finals series

DETROIT, May 21 (UPI) -- Chris Drury scored 2:17 into overtime Monday night to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings and even their NHL Western Conference final series at one game apiece.

Drury, who has scored six career postseason goals against Detroit, netted his fourth playoff game-winner against the Red Wings and 10th overall.

Peter Forsberg, who had a goal and three assists, fired a slap shot from the right faceoff circle that goaltender Dominik Hasek stopped easily. Steven Reinprecht corralled the rebound low in the right circle and fed Drury in the slot.

As defenseman Jiri Fischer unsuccessfully slid to block the pass, Drury deked to his backhand before slipping the puck past a sprawled Hasek into the net. The goal stole home-ice advantage away from the Presidents' Trophy winners.

Detroit received a gift from Colorado goaltender Patrick Roy in the latter minutes of the third period to tie the game for the third time.

With Reinprecht serving an interference penalty, defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom blasted a slap shot from the left point that went wide of the left post. After hitting the boards behind the net, the puck bounced directly back and caromed off Roy's right skate and into the net with 6:35 left to even the score, 3-3.

After surrendering three one-goal leads, Roy and the Avalanche improved to 10-0 in playoff games following a loss in which their opponents scored five or more goals.

The West series resumes Wednesday in Colorado. The East Conference.series, where Carolina and Toronto are tied 1-1, resumes Tuesday night in Toronto.

Cowboys cut QB Ryan Leaf

IRVING, Texas, May 21 (UPI) -- The Dallas Cowboys on Monday released Ryan Leaf, the oft-maligned quarterback who became expendable due to the emergence of Quincy Carter and the recent acquisition of former Stanford signal caller Chad Hutchinson.

Leaf was the second overall pick in the 1998 draft by the San Diego Chargers, but never came close to living up to expectations and was a bust before his release in February, 2001. He endured two injury-plagued seasons and often feuded with management.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Leaf last summer before cutting him before the season.

Leaf was signed by the Cowboys in October after Carter tore his hamstring. Leaf lost all three of his starts for Dallas and completed 45-of-88 passes in four games. His best effort was in a Thanksgiving Day loss to Denver in which the Cowboys rallied from a 26-3 deficit before losing 26-24.

A collegiate star at Washington State, Leaf is 4-17 as an NFL starter with 14 touchdown passes and 36 interceptions.
