Crowe: Give Ridley an Oscar

LONDON, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- New Zealand-born actor Russell Crowe is campaigning for his "Gladiator" and "American Gangster" director, Ridley Scott, to win his first Academy Award.

Scott has been nominated for best director for "Thelma & Louise," "Gladiator" and "Black Hawk Down," but has never taken home the statuette.

"If there's any director I know who deserves an Oscar, it's Ridley Scott," Crowe told the BBC during a recent visit to London. "He is one of the greatest visual artists of our time and deserving of any honor that comes his way."

Crowe -- who won a best actor Oscar in Scott's "Gladiator" -- also worked with Scott on "A Good Year."

Co-starring Denzel Washington, "American Gangster" opens in the United Kingdom Friday.

Scott's credits also include "Blade Runner" and "Alien."
