April 4 (UPI) -- Spain's Navantia is to provide maintenance support for five Fridtjof Nansen-class frigates it built for the Royal Norwegian Navy.

The support contract from the Norwegian Defense Logistic Organization is an extension of a 2013 deal and has a five-year period of performance, Navantia said in a press release.

The new contract includes continued provision of technical assistance, maintenance, repair, engineering studies, and the supply of spare parts. It also covers support for the maintenance of the Integrated Platform Management System of the vessels.

Additional details of the contract, including its value, were not disclosed.

Navantia last year opened a commercial office in Bergen, Norway, close to the country's naval base, which it said was "guaranteeing its presence in the country and increasing the commercial relations with this strategic client."
