NEW DELHI, May 18 (UPI) -- After victory Saturday by India's Bharatiya Janata Party, the country's prime minister of 10 years, Manmohan Singh, resigned.
The 81-year-old premier gave a televised address to the nation Saturday morning, then gave his resignation to President Pranab Mukherjee.
"Today India is a far stronger country than it was a decade ago," Singh said in his speech. "I give you credit for it. We still need to work hard to take this country forward."
His successor will be Narendra Modi, who leads the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was voted in by some 814 million eligible voters in the country's six-week election.
"I am confident that India will emerge as a strong economy in the world, blending tradition with modernity and unity with diversity," Singh added.
Singh is set to act as caretaker prime minister until Modi takes office next week.
