CAIRO, June 20 (UPI) -- Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is suffering from stomach cancer, his lawyer confirmed Monday.

Mubarak, 83, has been hospitalized since shortly after he stepped down in February after nearly three weeks of protests against his regime.

Al-Bawaba reported attorney Farid el-Deeb said the cancer was revealed in a medical report assessing Mubarak's ability to stand trial for allegedly ordering the deaths of demonstrators.

Mubarak has been hospitalized in Sharm el-Sheik. He suffered heart problems shortly after authorities began questioning him. In addition to allegedly ordering the killing of protesters, he also is accused of corruption and abuse of power.

A court appearance is set for Aug. 3.
