Judge: Investigate Mubarak for treason

CAIRO, June 5 (UPI) -- The president of Egypt's Supreme State Security Court has instructed state attorneys to question ex-president Hosni Mubarak about charges of treason.

State Supreme Court President Fekri Kharroub said Mubarak intended to turn the republic into a monarchy by transferring power to a son, Gamal, violating Egypt's Constitution and interfering in work by its judiciary, al-Masry al-Youm reported Sunday.

Mubarak is charged with corruption and intentionally killing protesters during the Jan. 25 revolution that led to his ouster. His sons will be tried for corruption.

Mubarak, his sons and business magnate Hussein Salem are also charged with the illegal acquisition of wealth and the selling of Egyptian natural gas to Israel at very low prices.

Investigators also said Mubarak allowed Salem to grab hundreds of thousands of acres of state-owned land in the most prominent tourist areas of Sharm el-Sheik.

Mubarak's trial is scheduled to start Aug. 3.
