Egypt nabs weapons stockpile for Gaza

CAIRO, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Egyptian security forces uncovered a stockpile of explosives and anti-aircraft missiles destined for the Gaza Strip, officials said.

The weapons were found buried in an abandoned warehouse in the middle of the Sinai Peninsula, Ma'an news agency reported Tuesday.

Egyptian authorities said dynamite, anti-aircraft missiles, cannon parts and rounds of ammunition and grenades were found by security forces.

The weapons were slated to be smuggled into Gaza through tunnels, the report said. It did not say when the weapons were discovered.

This is not the first time Egyptian security forces have found weapon stockpiles headed for the Gaza Strip. In September in a series of raids in the Sinai, Egyptian security forces found machine guns, artillery shells, anti-tank mines and other weapons. In August they raided a number of arms depots in Sinai and uncovered surface-to-air missiles.
