There were conflicting reports concerning Palestinian casualties.

A statement issued by the Israeli army said gunmen who were believed to have planted explosives at the Gaza border fence near an Israeli army patrol earlier were hiding in the building east of Khan Yunis, Ynetnews.com said.

Two devices exploded near an army patrol Wednesday and a third device was discovered and defused, the army said.

Palestinians reported an exchange of gunfire with soldiers, and there were reports Israeli tanks were spotted moving toward the Palestinian territory, the Web site said.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in Gaza said its operatives clashed with Israeli troops east of Khan Yunis after shooting at an Israeli soldier, which led to the aerial raid, the Ma'an news agency said.

"The (Israeli military) holds the Hamas terrorist organization solely responsible for maintaining the calm in the Gaza Strip and for any terrorist activity emanating from it. The (Israeli military) will continue to respond harshly to any attempt to use terror against the state of Israel," a statement issued by the army said.
