GAZA, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Hamas will never recognize Israel, Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh told thousands gathered in Gaza to mark the movement's 23rd anniversary.

"Hamas will not recognize Israel. Israel is an enemy and there is no future for occupation," the Ma'an news agency quoted him as saying. "From the lake to the river to the sea -- from Rafah to Naqura," Haniyeh declared, referring to the Gaza town and the town in southern Lebanon.

Hamas will continue to be the faithful guard of the rights of the Palestinian people, Haniyeh said.

Haniyeh said peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians are useless and assured the thousands gathered in Katiba Square west of Gaza City Hamas will win landslide victories in all Palestinian areas in future elections.

He urged Fatah to abandon peace talks with Israel to unblock the way to Palestinian unity.

The Hamas movement was founded by Sheik Ahmed Yassin in December 1987. Yassin was killed by Israel in March 2004.
