African leaders meet over Zimbabwe

PRETORIA, South Africa, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- African leaders gathered Monday in Pretoria, South Africa, with the aim of restoring a stalled power-sharing agreement in Zimbabwe, officials said.

If the talks among 15 members of the Southern African Development Community fail, Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe says he intends to form a government unilaterally with his ZANU-PF party, Voice of America reported Monday.

"Soon after this summit, whether there is an agreement or there is no agreement President Mugabe is going to form a Cabinet. He will obviously appoint his 15 Cabinet ministers and deputy ministers for ZANU-PF," Zimbabwe's Deputy Information Minister Bright Matonga said.

Under the power-sharing agreement signed four months ago, Mugabe would remain as president while opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai would be named to the newly created post of prime minister.

Zimbabwe's economy has been wracked by hyper-inflation, 80 percent unemployment and shortages of food and fuel, Voice of America reported.
