Obama rolls out stimulus lobbying push

WASHINGTON, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The Obama administration is launching a campaign to build support for a massive $825 billion economic stimulus measure, observers say.

President Barack Obama used Saturday's weekly radio and Internet address to tout some of the details of the plan, while Vice President Joe Biden was set to appear Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation" and chief economic adviser Lawrence Summers was scheduled to appear on NBC's "Meet the Press," The New York Times reported.

Obama, who met with his economic team Saturday, was planning to visit Capitol Hill in the coming week to talk with Republican lawmakers, who are stiffening their resistance to the magnitude of spending in the plan developed by House Democrats. They and Obama claim it will create or save more than 3 million jobs.

With about two-thirds of the $825 billion reserved for spending and the rest for tax breaks, House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio is pushing for deeper tax cuts instead. Boehner, also set to appear on Sunday's "Meet the Press," wants a plan that lowers federal income tax rates in the two lowest brackets rather than provide a $500 per worker tax credit, the Times said.
