Coalition gets Polish PM, 3 Cabinet seats

WARSAW, Poland, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Donald Tusk, leader of the pro-EU Civic Platform, said its coalition Peasant Party is likely to get ministries of economy, agriculture and environment.

Tusk, whose center-right, pro-business Civic Platform won Polish general elections Oct. 21, said Waldemar Pawlak, leader of the junior Peasant Party, will be named deputy prime minister and economy minister, Polish Radio reported Tuesday.

He did not offer names for the other two ministries.

Polish President Lech Kaczynski is expected to designate Tusk as prime minister, only after his twin brother Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski resigns and a newly elected parliament’s 460-seat lower house convenes Monday.

Civic Platform, which won 209 deputies seats, defeated the Kaczynski brothers’ conservative Law and Justice party, with 166 deputies.

The leftist group of former communists and Solidarity activists placed third with 53 deputies and the Peasant Party was fourth with 31 deputies.
