Lady Bird Johnson recovering from illness

AUSTIN, Texas, June 23 (UPI) -- Former first lady Lady Bird Johnson was reported to be alert and visiting with friends and family at an Austin, Texas, hospital Saturday.

Johnson, 94, was hospitalized Thursday at Seton Medical Center in Austin, Texas, for a low-grade fever. The exact nature of her illness was not released.

A stroke in 2002 left her with speech problems, but Johnson was alert enough Friday to point her finger at two of her granddaughters, telling them it was late and they should go home, another granddaughter, Nicole Covert, told Saturday's Austin American-Statesman.

Johnson started the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Texas.

Prior to her illness, she toured the Texas hills to enjoy the wildflowers blooming at the LBJ Ranch, where she had lived with her husband, former President Lyndon B. Johnson.

"The ranch is spectacular this year," Covert said.
