Palestinian leaders discuss unity

GAZA, March 5 (UPI) -- Palestinian Authority Chairman and Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas met in Gaza Monday to discuss unity.

The men continued six hours of talks they had Sunday and a Hamas spokesman said they were likely to continue for several days, the Alalam Satellite TV network reported.

The pair signed a power-sharing deal in Mecca last month but several obstacles remain, the report said. A Palestinian source said one of them is who would serve as interior minister, a position that controls the powerful security services.

Abbas and Haniyeh agreed in Mecca to set a five-week deadline for concluding talks, which expires on March 21.

An adviser to Abbas, Nabil Abou Roudeina, said a national unity government will be formed in less than a week, as the discussions were taking place "in a positive atmosphere."

"The government is coming along. There is no serious problem in the consultations," he said.
