Salazar sees historic coalition in reform

WASHINGTON, April 8 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo., said a "historic coalition" has united behind reform of U.S. immigration laws.

Salazar delivered the Democrats' Spanish-language radio address Saturday, and criticized Republicans for being "unable to overcome their internal divisions" and pass immigration reform.

Democrats are backing a Senate bill, championed by Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., that contains much of what President George W. Bush wants in immigration reform -- including a guest workers' program. A measure passed by House of Representatives Republicans is much harsher, making it a felony to be in the United States illegally.

Reform has been driven by large demonstrations -- largely by people of Hispanic background -- in recent weeks.

"Our nation has seen a historic coalition come together, from all sectors of American society, who have loudly and clearly called for comprehensive immigration reform," Salazar said.

"From business groups to labor unions, from religious leaders and conservatives to progressives and immigration advocates, our country understands that Latinos are watching what happens in Washington, D.C., and have the political power and clout to make an impact in major political debates."
