Thailand to 'peace bomb' troubled regions

BANGKOK, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Thailand's government was preparing Saturday to launch an unusual peace campaign, the BBC reported.

Military planes will drop an estimated one hundred million paper origami cranes Sunday on the country's Muslim south, the BBC said.

The "peace bombing" will coincide with the 77th birthday of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The BBC reported that more than 500 people were killed this year in the troubled provinces close to the Malaysian border. Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra suggested the plan following an incident where 80 Muslim protestors died of suffocation in army custody.
