Top Democrat quits Senate Committee

WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Executive Director Andy Grossman resigned unexpectedly, Washington's newspaper Roll Call reported Tuesday.

The DSCC's chairman, Sen. Jon Corzine, D-N.J., called the departing director, a committee employee since the 2000 cycle, "a consummate professional." Grossman would not comment on his departure.

According to unnamed Democrats cited by Roll Call, Corzine and Grossman "had a strained relationship that progressively worsened over the past several months."

Grossman's future plans have not been announced. Roll Call speculated, Grossman was likely to end up in a position where he could help Democrats running for the Senate in 2004 raise money or with a presidential campaign, "possibly that of former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean."

David Rudd, a former chief of staff to retiring U.S. Sen. Ernest "Fritz" Hollings, D-S.C., takes over as the committee's new top staffer.
