Andy Murray advances in Australian Open

Sam Querrey pulled the upset of Wimbledon last year, stunning top-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

The 29-year-old Californian couldn't duplicate the feat Friday at the Australian Open, falling 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 to top-seeded Andy Murray in the third round at Melbourne, Australia.

Murray broke serve five times, while Querrey, the 31st seed, managed only one service break.

Murray prevailed despite nursing an ailing right ankle.

"It was tough," Murray said. "Especially in the first set, Sam was hitting a huge ball, he served extremely well but the key moment came at 3-4 in the first set. I saved a break point and broke the next game and had the momentum after that."

Next up for Murray is a fourth-round matchup with Germany's Mischa Zverev, who beat Tunisia's Malek Jaziri 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. The 29-year-old Scotsman is still looking for his first career Australian Open title. He is a five-time finalist, including defeats to Djokovic for the championship each of the past two years.

In other third-round action Friday, fourth-seeded Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland got through a tough battle with 29th-seeded Viktor Troicki of Serbia, emerging with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7) victory in 2 hours, 32 minutes.

Wawrinka twice served for the match in the fourth set, but each time Troicki came up with a break. Troicki had a set point in the tiebreaker before Wawrinka took the final three points.

"It was a really close tiebreak," Wawrinka said. "I'm really happy to get through and not having to play a fifth set."

Troicki fell to 0-8 in his career against Wawrinka.

Wawrinka's fourth-round opponent will be Italy's Andreas Seppi, who slipped past Belgium's Steve Darcis 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (2).

In a match that lasted 3 hours, 33 minutes, France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the 12th seed, eliminated 23rd-seeded American Jack Sock 7-6 (4), 7-5, 6-7 (8), 6-3.

Tsonga logged 23 aces to Sock's five, and he closed out the match with a service winner. Tsonga also finished with a huge edge in winners 73-39.

Switzerland's Roger Federer, a four-time champion in Melbourne and the 17th seed this year, was scheduled to face 10th-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic later Friday.
