Ottawa Senators G Andrew Hammond needs season-ending surgery

Ottawa Senators goaltender Andrew Hammond's injury-plagued campaign came to an end following the news that he needs season-ending surgery.

Senators general manager Pierre Dorion on Monday said Hammond, the hero of Ottawa's dramatic run to a playoff spot in 2014-15, underwent tests that revealed a torn labrum in his right hip.

"This surgery will keep Andrew out for the remainder of the season and our doctors are estimating that his rehabilitation will allow him to begin skating in approximately 12 weeks," Dorion said.

Injuries limited Hammond to only six appearances and four starts this season. He surrendered six goals in a shutout loss to St. Louis on Feb. 7, his first start in nearly two months.

Hammond tied an NHL record by surrendering two goals or fewer in 12 consecutive starts to begin his career and went his first 15 starts without a regulation loss (14-0-1) to ignite Ottawa's postseason charge as a rookie.

The 29-year-old native of Surrey, British Columbia, never came close to duplicating that success, going 7-11-4 with a 2.65 goals-against average in 2015-16. Hammond finished this season with an 0-2-0 mark, 4.08 goals-against average and .837 save percentage.
