UTEP dismisses three basketball players amid gambling probe

EL PASO, Texas, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- Leading scorer McKenzie Moore and two other Texas-El Paso basketball players have been dismissed from the team amid a gambling probe, the school said Tuesday.

UTEP Vice President of Legal Affairs Ricardo Aduato said Moore, Jalen Ragland and Justin Crosgile were off the team after the school reported suspicions the trio may have been betting on sports to the FBI, the El Paso Times reported.

Moore -- who was averaging a team-best 13.1 points in 11 games this season -- and Ragland have been suspended since Dec. 28 for unspecified reasons.

Aduato said the school self-reported the alleged sports betting activities but added there were no evidence the three were betting on UTEP games or engaged in point shaving.

The NCAA calls for one-year bans from competition as well as a loss of one year of eligibility in such cases.

Crosgile is a senior. Moore and Ragland are juniors.
