Baltimore hoops hero Devin Gray dead of heart attack at 41

MARIETTA, Ga., Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Former Baltimore basketball star Devin Gray died of a heart attack at the age of 41 in suburban Atlanta this weekend, his family said.

Gray was the Baltimore Sun High School Basketball Player of the Year in 1991 and went on to a college career with Clemson and played four years in the NBA.

Gray had moved to Atlanta this summer to take a job managing a night club. Gray's cousin, Zeke Marshall, told the Sun that Gray had played basketball with friends Saturday morning and was stricken with chest pains in the afternoon. He died at a Marietta hospital later in the day.

Saturday's fatal heart attack was not the only cardiac issue Gray experienced in his lifetime. His Clemson career was interrupted by a heart attack during his junior year in 1994. He recovered but only played in seven games after that.

Although he eventually lost his academic eligibility at Clemson, he made it to the NBA as an undrafted free agent and spent time with Sacramento, San Antonio and Houston.
