ATLANTA, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Keith Appling sparked a late charge with 16 second-half points Tuesday, boosting 22nd-ranked Michigan State over No. 7 Kansas 67-64 in Atlanta.

Appling finished with 19 points overall and Gary Harris added 18 for the Spartans (1-1), who erased a five-point deficit with 5 minutes remaining and outscored the Jayhawks 13-5 in the closing minutes.

Brandon Dawson contributed 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting for Michigan State in the Champions Classic game at the Georgia Dome.

Kansas (1-1) fell despite 16 points from Elijah Johnson and 14 from Ben McLemore.
