NHL: San Jose 5, Washington 2

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Patrick Marleau scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and added two assists Saturday in the San Jose Sharks' 5-2 win over Washington.

The Capitals' Joel Ward pulled Washington into a 2-2 tie with a goal 44 seconds into the final frame but Marleau struck only 16 seconds later, taking a behind-the-back pass from Joe Thornton and firing it home for his 15th goal.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Jason Demers, Brent Burns and Torrey Mitchell also scored, with Mitchell's an empty-netter. Dan Boyle notched three assists.

Antti Niemi turned aside 28-of-30 shots for the Sharks, who logged their fifth straight win and 15th in 16 meetings with Washington.

Dennis Wideman scored and Tomas Vokoun made 34 saves for the Capitals, who saw their four-game winning streak snapped.
