Alicia Keys snags 5 AMA nominations

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Jazz-pop newcomer Alicia Keys led the field Tuesday with five nominations as nominees were announced for the 29th annual American Music Awards, to be presented in Los Angeles in January.

Several artists -- including Janet Jackson, 'N Sync, Lonestar and the late R&B singer Aaliyah -- received two nominations each.

Keys' debut album, "Songs in A Minor," was nominated for favorite soul/rhythm & blues album. She was nominated for favorite female pop/rock artist, favorite soul/rhythm & blues artist, and favorite new artist in both pop and soul/rhythm & blues categories.

The other nominees for favorite female pop-rock artist are Janet Jackson and Jennifer Lopez. Jackson's album, "All for You," is up for favorite soul/rhythm & blues album.

'N Sync and Dave Matthews Band were both nominated for favorite band, duo or group, along with U2. 'N Sync's "Celebrity" and Dave Matthews Band's "Everyday" were nominated for favorite pop/rock album, along with "Survivor," by Destiny's Child.

Destiny's Child was nominated for favorite soul/rhythm & blues band, duo or group, along with The Isley Brothers featuring Ronald Isley aka Mr. Biggs, and Jagged Edge.

Aaliyah, who was killed in a plane crash in August, was nominated for favorite female soul/rhythm & blues artist. Her album, "Aaliyah," is up for favorite soul/rhythm & blues album.

Lenny Kravitz, R. Kelly and Shaggy are nominated for favorite male pop/rock artist.

In addition to Keys, the nominees for favorite new pop/rock artist are Nelly Furtado and Lifehouse. The other nominees for favorite new soul/rhythm & blues artist are Blu Cantrell and Musiq Soulchild.

The nominees for favorite male soul/rhythm & blues artist are Ginuwine, R. Kelly and Luther Vandross.

Toby Keith, Tim McGraw and Travis Tritt were nominated for favorite male country artist. Sara Evans, Faith Hill and Jo Dee Messina were nominated for favorite female country artist.

Brooks & Dunn, Lonestar and SHeDAISY are up for favorite country band, duo or group. The nominees for favorite country album are "Steers & Stripes" (Brooks & Dunn), "I'm Already There" (Lonestar) and "Set This Circus Down" (Tim McGraw).

Jamie O'Neal, Blake Shelton and Trick Pony are nominated for favorite new country artist.

Enrique Iglesias, Shakira and Jaci Velasquez were nominated for favorite Latin music artist. Nelly, Ja Rule and Shaggy are up for favorite rap/hip hop artist.

"American Pie 2," "Moulin Rouge" and "Save The Last Dance" were nominated for favorite soundtrack album.

The American Music Awards added two new categories this year -- contemporary inspirational and the new music award, sponsored by the Coca-Cola Co.

The nominees for favorite contemporary inspirational artist are Yolanda Adams, Steven Curtis Chapman and Donnie McClurkin.

The new music award is designed as a new talent search involving a nationwide competition to find the best-unsigned band or artist in America. The finalists are Carbon Leaf, of Richmond, Va.; Live Honey, of New York; and Yo, Flaco! Of Denver. The winner will perform at the awards ceremonies.

The awards will also feature the annual Award of Merit for "outstanding contributions to the musical entertainment of the American public."

The list of previous honorees includes The Beach Boys, Irving Berlin, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, Merle Haggard, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Little Richard, Loretta Lynn, Paul McCartney, Willie Nelson, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Tammy Wynette.

The 29th American Music Awards will be presented on Jan. 9, 2002 at the Shrine Auditorium, in ceremonies to be televised over ABC-TV. Winners are determined by the public in a national poll conducted by the National Family Opinion, Inc. firm under the supervision of Broadcast Research and Consulting, Inc.
