NEW DELHI, May 9 (UPI) --
India Friday lodged a strong protest with Pakistan Rangers following heavy firing from across the border that India says was used to send in militants.
An Indian Border Security Force border observation post in the Jammu region's Sambha sector came under heavy firing late Thursday from the Pakistani side. According to a BSF official, the firing was aimed at sending militants into strife-torn Jammu & Kashmir state, which India and Pakistan both claim.
He said a BSF ambush party detected a group of intruders trying to enter the country. The BSF opened fire. Another heavily armed group immediately came to the support of the intruders. The exchange of fire between the two sides continued for about 15 minutes, the official said.
Pakistan's Interior Ministry denied any involvement of the Pakistani army in the incident.© 2008 United Press International. All Rights Reserved.
