'Hugo,' 'Artist' earn 11 Critics' Choice nods apiece

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- "Hugo" and "The Artist" each earned 11 nominations for the 17th annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards, organizers announced in Los Angeles Tuesday morning.

Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" garnered nods for Best Picture, Best Young Actor for Asa Butterfield, Best Director for Scorsese, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound and Best Score.

Michel Hazanavicius' "The Artist" picked up nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor for Jean Dujardin, Best Supporting Actress for Berenice Bejo, Best Acting Ensemble, Best Director for Hazanavicius, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, Best Costume Design and Best Score.

"Hugo" and "The Artist" will compete for the Best Picture honor with "The Descendants," "Drive," "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," "The Help," "Midnight in Paris," "Moneyball," "The Tree of Life" and "War Horse."

Shortlisted for the Best Acting Ensemble title are the casts of "The Artist," "Bridesmaids," "The Descendants," "The Help" and "The Ides of March."

The nominees for Best Director are Stephen Daldry for "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," Hazanavicius for "The Artist," Alexander Payne for "The Descendants," Nicolas Winding Refn for "Drive," Scorsese for "Hugo" and Steven Spielberg for "War Horse."

In the running for the Best Actor accolade are George Clooney for "The Descendants," Leonardo DiCaprio for "J. Edgar," Dujardin for "The Artist," Michael Fassbender for "Shame," Ryan Gosling for "Drive" and Brad Pitt for "Moneyball."

Vying for the Best Actress prize are Viola Davis for "The Help," Elizabeth Olsen for "Martha Marcy May Marlene," Meryl Streep for "The Iron Lady," Tilda Swinton for "We Need to Talk About Kevin," Charlize Theron for "Young Adult" and Michelle Williams for "My Week With Marilyn."

Competing in the Best Supporting Actor category are Kenneth Branagh for "My Week with Marilyn," Albert Brooks for "Drive," Nick Nolte for "Warrior," Patton Oswalt for "Young Adult," Christopher Plummer for "Beginners" and Andy Serkis for "Rise of the Planet of the Apes."

Nominated for Best Supporting Actress are Bejo for "The Artist," Jessica Chastain for "The Help," Melissa McCarthy for "Bridesmaids," Carey Mulligan for "Shame," Octavia Spencer for "The Help" and Shailene Woodley for "The Descendants."

The Broadcast Film Critics Association is to present the prizes at a ceremony Jan. 12 at the Hollywood Palladium.

The awards show is to air on VH1.
