Dec. 16 (UPI) -- A Lebanese Army sniper shot and killed an Israeli soldier Sunday evening, in the first time the two armies have exchanged fire since 2010.

After the soldier was shot, Israeli forces returned fire. The Lebanese Army then reported that the soldier that opened fire on the Israelis was unaccounted for, though he has reported for duty today.

"We will not tolerate aggression against the state of Israel, and maintain the right to exercise self-defense against perpetrators of attacks against Israel and its civilians," said Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, an Israeli army spokesperson.

UNIFIL plans to chair an urgent meeting Monday with senior military officers from both Lebanon and Israel.

Israeli army spokesperson, Lt. Libby Weiss, said Israeli forces noticed "suspicious movement" along the border a little after midnight, and shot two members of Lebanon’s Army.
