WASHINGTON, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- The U.S. Department of State announced on Thursday that it has amended the foreign terrorist designation for Harakat ul-Mujahidin.
The amendment recognizes HUM's alias: Ansar ul-Ummah.
HUM has been known by many names in order to avoid sanctions, the State Department noted.
"Most recently, HUM created Ansar ul-Ummah as a front organization, claiming that the group was an organization for the preaching of Islam, politics, and social work."
HUM, "a Pakistan-based terrorist organization that seeks the annexation of Kashmir into Pakistan and poses a direct risk to U.S., Afghan, and allied interests in Afghanistan," has been accused of terror activities in Kashmir, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. It was designated a foreign terrorist organization in 1997. The State Department said Thursday that it is maintaining that designation.
Foreign terrorist designations are authorized under Executive Order 13224 to target terrorists and supporters of terrorists or acts of terrorism.
