Egypt nabs missiles bound for Gaza

CAIRO, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Egypt says it seized missiles and anti-tank rockets in Sinai that were to be smuggled into the Gaza Strip, security officials said.

The munitions were found in a warehouse in the vicinity of Arish in northern Sinai on Friday, al-Arabiya reported.

An Egyptian security source said the missiles were to be smuggled via underground tunnels to Gaza, the Times of Israel reported. According to the source, six U.S.-made missiles that were possibly smuggled into the Sinai from Libya were found. The source said the missiles have a distance capability of 2 kilometers (1.24 miles).

In December, Egyptian security forces captured 17 French-made rockets that were to be smuggled into Gaza, the Times of Israel said.

In August last year, Egypt launched a military offensive in the Sinai Peninsula against terror cells there.
