GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- A spokesman for the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, said the death of a detainee found in his maximum-security cell was being investigated.
U.S. Navy Capt. Robert Durand did not identify the man found dead Saturday, saying the military was waiting until the man's family was notified, The Miami Herald reported Monday.
The man wasn't convicted of a war crime and wasn't facing charges by military commission, Durand said. He was "in a disciplinary status," entailing loss of some privileges, for throwing a container of his bodily fluids at a guard, the spokesman said.
Durand said the detainee was found unconscious and unresponsive in his cell during a routine check. First aid was rendered at the scene and then naval medical staff at the base hospital also attempted to revive him.
"The cause of death is under investigation," Durand told the Herald by email.
The man's death raises to nine the number of detainees who have died in custody at the Guantanamo facility, the Herald said. The prison population now is 167.
