Five dead in attack on Michoacan town

VISTA HERMOSA, Mexico, July 23 (UPI) -- Four police officers and a civilian were killed by dozens of hooded gunmen who attacked the town of Vista Hermosa in Mexico's Michoacan state, officials said.

El Universal said more than 100 hooded men with high-powered weapons drove into the main square of Vista Hermosa at about 11 p.m. Saturday and began firing into the air and into the town hall, The mayor was able to escape harm but the county's director of public safety and three state troopers were killed, along with a civilian from Jalisco who was caught in the crossfire.

Drug violence between rival gangs has been prevalent in the area in recent months. In March, three men were executed and hung on the bridge that divides Michoacan and Jalisco states. Five policemen were later kidnapped, the newspaper said Monday.
