LONDON, April 23 (UPI) -- Instead of trying to ban online pornography in Britain, Parliament is favoring "opt in" terms for those who want access to the material, officials said.
While a cross-party bloc of ministers has suggested Internet users who seek access to hardcore porn Web sites specifically request it, or "opt in," Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt said such a regulation might infringe on civil liberties and recommended allowing Internet users to choose "yes" or "no" when it comes to filtering Web sites, The Sun tabloid reported Monday.
Parliament Member Claire Perry, aligned with the "opt in" group, pointed out the "yes-no" proposal did not go far enough, and that under her plan, a computer user would have to prove he or she is over age 18 and register to view adult content web sites.
"Our kids deserve more than empty phrases like civil liberties. If there's no age check there, then we are not solving the problem, Perry said.
