Injury toll rises in Lebanon collapse

TABARJA, Lebanon, March 10 (UPI) -- Eight people were injured when a building partially collapsed north of Beirut, Lebanese security officials said Saturday.

The victims were all construction workers who were living in the building located at a resort in the beach town of Tabarja, The Beirut Daily Star reported.

Three men were rescued shortly after the collapse occurred Friday and five more were freed from the rubble overnight.

The Interior Ministry said the building belonged to a construction company but had not been registered with the government since 1970. The Tabarja Beach Complex said the building was on their property but belonged to an independent ownership group.

The Daily Star said Friday's collapse was the latest in a recent series of such incidents that has raised questions among the public about the effectiveness of Lebanon's safety regulations.
