Palestinian leaders meet in Qatar

DOHA, Qatar, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Palestinian leaders were in Qatar Sunday to negotiate unkept agreements made between the Fatah and Hamas parties and discuss renewed talks with Israel.

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas was to meet with Hamas politburo chief Khaled Mashaal to discuss the formation of a PA unity government, which was supposed to be created after an agreement between the two parties in May, Arutz Sheva reported.

Hamas, which won a parliamentary majority in 2006, controls Gaza, while Fatah holds the governing majority in the larger West Bank.

Abbas and Mashaal each met privately with Jordanian King Abdullah II in Amman Saturday before their departure for Qatar -- Abdullah has been involved with renewing final status talks between Israel and PA, the Israeli broadcaster said.

Hamas has said it is unwilling to change its charter, which does not recognize the state of Israel and calls for the elimination of the "Zionist entity," Arutz Sheva reported.
