SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- The interim Yemeni government has approved a proposal that gives amnesty to President Ali Abdullah Saleh and everyone who worked with him during his tenure.

The proposed law was submitted by Vice President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi. It requires the approval of Parliament.

The amnesty would cover all civilian, military and security apparatuses, the Saba news agency reported Monday.

Saleh, who has been president of Yemen for 33 years, has yet to follow through on promises to step down from power in the wake of last year's mass protests. He has been recovering from an assassination attempt.

Saleh's party and several opposition groups have agreed to unite behind the current vice president in next month's presidential election.
