Palestine joins UNESCO

PARIS, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was on hand Tuesday for the raising of the Palestinian flag at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

The ceremony marked the inclusion of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

UNESCO voted to admit Palestine Oct. 31, becoming the first U.N. agency to do so.

Abbas political adviser Nimr Hammad said the Palestinian leader planned to meet with French President Nicolas Sarkozy during his visit to France.

Hammad said he will also tour Belgium and Turkey, and meet with the presidents of both of those nations.
